A statement from Diane Toscano, Esq., attorney for Scott Taylor, on the Roanoke special prosecutor's remarks was published by The Virginian-Pilot, Washington Post and WAVY-TV 10. Toscano's full public statement can be found below:
“There has been a lot of innuendo in our community since the unfortunate remarks of the Roanoke special prosecutor who cast a false cloud over Mr. Taylor’s head within 60 days of an election. I spoke with the special prosecutor John Beamer, and despite my direct appeals to him and his supervisor, Donald Caldwell, to clarify Mr. Beamer’s misleading press statements, they have chosen instead to sit on a powerful set of facts and allow the innuendo they created to linger.
To quell the unfortunate innuendo that’s now being used as partisan ammunition, it’s sad that I have to say this but very important that I do: the additional indictment referred to by the special prosecutor is not Scott Taylor, and insinuations otherwise are patently false, harmful, and threaten the democratic process in our community. Mr. Beamer told me this fact directly and assured me that there has been no direct evidence against Scott Taylor since the two-year-old case began.
While Scott is busy out campaigning, I encourage every citizen in our community to read the full contents of my letter to the prosecutor to see for themselves what a miscarriage of justice looks like. All citizens who live in the 2nd Congressional District, regardless of political party, deserve a fair election that is free of outside interference.”
