Burning Questions on Marijuana Law in Virginia? Here’s the Town Hall Recap.

Jul 03, 2021

On June 30, 2021, the eve of Virginia’s legalization of marijuana, Toscano Law Group held a Town Hall discussion with Ramin Fatehi, incoming Commonwealth’s Attorney of Norfolk. He currently serves as Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney in Norfolk where he is in charge of drug case prosecution. Fatehi will be Norfolk's first new chief prosecutor in over a decade in 2022.

The Facebook Live event discussed what every Virginian should know about what’s legal and what’s not beginning July 1, 2021. Toscano Law Group’s Diane Toscano and Kelly Cournoyer contributed to the panel discussion.

Virginia marijuana laws are not as cut and dry as some may think, so this event informed the public about how to protect themselves from any discrepancies with law enforcement. Here are some interesting questions the panelists answered:

  • Will you be able to have your firearm and marijuana in the same area? 13:50
  • How is it possible for one to obtain the marijuana or seeds right now – doesn’t this go with the assumption that a crime has been committed? 17:43
  • Won’t the four marijuana plants you can legally own produce more than one ounce of marijuana permitted? What do you do about this? 19:24
  • How should you count one ounce of Marijuana in food products? 21:25
  • Can you travel across state lines with marijuana? 21:57
  • If you live near a school, can you still grow and possess marijuana? 23:05
  • Can you be denied employment for failed urinalysis based on marijuana usage? 33:56

The event is a part of Toscano Law Group’s awareness campaign, “
Clear the Smoke, Virginia,” which educates citizens on Virginia's newfound legalization of marijuana.
